Carbon Capture and Storage or Sequestration (CCS) is the process of capturing waste carbon dioxide (CO2) from large point sources, such as fossil fuel (coal, gas-fired) power plants and large industrial sources. Carbon capture and sequestration are defined as a combination of technologies that capture and store carbon dioxide deep underground or turned in useful products, preventing its release into the atmosphere. This set of technologies can greatly reduce CO2 emissions.

CCS is a three-step process that includes:

  • Capture of CO2 from power plants or industrial processes

  • Transport of the captured and compressed CO2 (usually in pipelines)

  • Underground injection and geologic sequestration of the CO2 into deep underground rock formations. These formations are often a mile or more beneath the surface and consist of porous rock that holds the CO2. Overlying these formations are impermeable, non-porous layers of rock that trap the CO2 and prevent it from migrating upward.

At every point in the CCS chain, from production to storage, industry has at its disposal a number of process technologies that are well understood and have excellent health and safety records. The commercial deployment of CCS will involve the widespread adoption of these CCS techniques, combined with robust monitoring techniques and Government regulations.
